March

Here in the UK spring is definitely in the air and whilst in the more southern parts of Sweden the weather is warming up, the north experiences winter well into April.  In fact springtime in the north can be one of the most beautiful times of year.  With icy fields glittering in the snow it can be a veritable winter wonderland and the perfect time to explore the white winter wilds of northern Scandinavia.

For skygazers, early spring in particular is a great time to view the spectacular and ethereal sight of the Northern Lights.  These weird moving illuminations seen in shades of red, green, blue and violet have been watched and interpreted in many ways over the years - the Vikings believed the haunting sight of the lights a reflection of the ghosts of virgins - not sure about that, but they are no doubt a sight to behold.  An aurora watching trip to northern Scandinavia can be combined with other winter pursuits such as reindeer sledding, cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing.

Despite the continued winter cold in the north, when March arrives the promise of spring and all it has to offer is definitely felt by all.
